A question we hear all the time is: How often should I redesign my website?
In the web development world, you’ll typically hear a recommendation of every 2-3 years for a website redesign. The web is ever-evolving. From new standards for mobile to changes in design, it’s important to keep your site feeling fresh for customers.
That inevitably leads to the next question: Do I have to change all my content when I redesign my website?
Not at all! In fact, if you’ve done great SEO optimizations to your content and have reached your conversion goals, you’ll want to keep the majority of your content the same, just with a new look and feel.
Website redesign costs often come down to the number of changes that need to happen. If your site isn’t mobile-optimized (what we call mobile-first), doesn’t have proper tracking and analytics, and has a messy site structure, you’re probably due for a pretty major overhaul. If you’ve been keeping your site up to date and only really need a visual change your costs will be much more manageable.
When you’re looking for a web designer to help you with a website redesign be sure to ask them for detailed recommendations and why. Are they recommending changing CMS platforms? Do they think the content needs to change? It’s good to know the details upfront so you can make an informed decision on what needs to happen versus what doesn’t.
A few years ago we built a custom WordPress site for our clients Kickstart Fund. Over the years the content has been updated to address their needs and features tweaked to align with their objectives. This year they had a full brand redesign which meant the site needed to be updated to match their new brand identity.
Rather than build a new site from scratch we were able to use their flexible site design to match their evolving brand within a matter of weeks. The website feels brand new but didn’t require the budget of building an all-new site.
